Why does Atlantic Timberframes Inc. Prefer to use Douglas Fir?

Strength and Durability: Douglas fir is chosen for its exceptional strength, high density, and durability, making it ideal for load-bearing applications in timber frame construction.

Appearance and Workability: With a warm, reddish-brown hue, fine texture, and straight grain, Douglas fir provides an aesthetically pleasing finish. Its workability facilitates intricate joinery and detailing in timber frame construction.

Sustainability and Availability: When sourced responsibly, Douglas fir can be a sustainable option, and its widespread availability in many regions makes it a practical and accessible choice for timber frame builders.

What is the make up of a timber frame structure?
A timber frame structure typically consists of several key elements that contribute to its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal:

  1. Timber posts and girts: The vertical timbers are referred to as posts, while horizontal timbers are the girts. These are the primary load -bearing elements of the structure.
  2. Joints: We embrace traditional mortis and tenon joinery and securing with wooden pegs.
    • Atlantic Timberframes Inc. still handcrafts each joint for a tight fit. Most companies today use CNC machinery to speed up the process. We understand this process takes longer, but we will not sacrifice quality for speed.
  3. Braces and Trusses: Diagonal braces and trusses provide additional structural support, preventing lateral movement and contributing to the stability of the frame, allowing for open floors without columns.
What type of structures can be built with a timber frame?

Atlantic Timberframes Inc. specializes in crafting timber frames for a diverse range of structures. Our expertise extends to designing and constructing timber frames for residential homes, commercial buildings, barns, pavilions, and other custom projects. Whether you’re envisioning a rustic cabin, a contemporary residence, or a functional commercial space, our skilled team is adept at tailoring timber frame solutions to meet your unique needs and preferences. The versatility of timber frames allows for creative and distinctive designs, making them a suitable choice for a wide array of structures that stand the test of time.

What is a “hybrid” timber frame, and how do you create it?

A “hybrid design” timber frame combines the timeless beauty and strength of traditional timber framing with modern construction techniques and materials. This approach allows for greater flexibility in design, incorporating elements such as steel, glass, or conventional framing alongside the classic timber structure.

At Atlantic Timberframes Inc., creating a hybrid design involves a collaborative process with our clients and often includes architects and engineers. We begin by understanding the unique vision and requirements of the project. Depending on the design goals, we integrate materials like steel beams for large spans or incorporate glass elements for enhanced natural light.

What are structural insulated panels (ISPs)?

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are building components that consist of a sandwich of two layers of structural board-typically oriented strand board (OSB)-with rigid foam installation core in between. This innovative design not only imparts exceptional strength and durability to the panels but also establishes an efficient building envelope, seamlessly integrating structural support with effective installation.

How much does it cost to build a timber frame home?

The cost of a timber frame home can vary widely based on factors such as the size of the home, the complexity of the design, the chosen materials, and the region where the construction takes place. Additionally, customization, finishes, and other features will influence the overall cost. To get an accurate estimate for your specific project, it is recommended to contact us directly. You can fill out our contact form, provide details about your project and budget, and consult with our team to receive a personalized cost estimate tailored to your requirements. This will ensure that you receive the most accurate and up-to-date information based on your unique needs and preferences.

Are the assembly and erection costs included in your pricing?

The crew from Atlantic Timberframes Inc. will raise the timber frame structure on a deck or concrete slab at your building location. Added to this cost is the freight expense from our shop in Mercer, PA to your site, crane rental cost necessary to erect the timber frame, and travel/lodging expenses on projects out of our driving area.

When will I receive the cost for my timber frame?

After a consultation and Atlantic Timberframes Inc. receival of floorplans, we can develop a proposal to show the timber frame cost. Cost varies from project to project.
